HR Tips & Resume Advice
GMSI would like to hear from you, if you have technical skills — even if you do not see a position currently open to apply for. To make it easy for us to keep you in our active files, take a few minutes to ensure that your resume materials include the following items:
- Cover Letter — A cover letter briefly summarizing your skills and suggesting some potential areas for employment. In this letter, let us know whether you are applying for a specific position. If there are positions you would not want, mention those in the letter. If you are currently working in one specialty (e.g., Novell networking) and want to change to another (e.g., NT networking), let us know you are trying to make that change. GMSI frequently has openings to be staffed at government facilities and companies in the Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia areas. If you have a location preference, be sure to tell us in your cover letter. Your cover letter should let us know if you will be unavailable for an extended time or if you are moving, especially if you are moving closer to the Washington, DC area. If you have a Web site or an online resume, include the URL in your cover letter.
- Resume — Your resume should have a clear statement at the top of the first page with your name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address. This enables us to quickly find necessary contact information. Positions are often filled rapidly, so if you are responding to our voicemail inquiry check back with us as soon as possible. If you are sending your resume as an e-mail attachment, please send it as a Microsoft Word document or as an ASCII text file.
- Certifications — If you have any certifications (e.g., CNE, CAN, Cisco, etc.), include a photocopy of your certificate with your resume. Do not send the original to us.
If you are new to job searching or it has been a while since your last search, the GMSI Human Resources Department is building an online library of articles that we feel are helpful to applicants. These are carefully selected resources designed to help you in evaluating and refining your job search, as well as offering some help in the process of application and interviewing. As we develop or locate materials, we will be adding to this library so please check back often. Thank you for considering GMSI. If you have any questions, contact us at opportunity@gmsi.com.
