The Dallas Morning News GMSI and StreamSage Win Air Force Research Laboratory Contract WASHINGTON, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ — The Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate (AFRL) awarded a two year contract to strategic partners GMSI and StreamSage, to develop language translation technologies for support of military operations. With the tremendous volume of spoken content the U.S. military and intelligence communities must translate and mine for valuable information, a more automated, electronic translation system is being sought. The contract calls for technology development that will focus on the "Interlingua" technique, a type of "universal translator," or intermediary language that enables foreign languages to be converted into English with a minimum of human translation or training. As the prime contractor, StreamSage was chosen based on its expertise in computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and speech recognition. GMSI, which has over 10 years of systems integration experience in the federal market, made an ownership investment in StreamSage in 2001, enabling the companies to develop and deploy these language- understanding technologies within government agencies. Often referred to as "machine translation," these sophisticated, language understanding technologies are now possible through the increases in computing speed and power. StreamSage's contextual approach to translation provides greater accuracy compared to the limitations inherent in current approaches. StreamSage's current government and commercial sector applications are used to contextually index information, allowing users to quickly and accurately search, retrieve and manage audio, video, and multimedia content. About StreamSage The software applications developed by StreamSage are the result of years of research in the areas of computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and speech recognition. StreamSage continues to push the boundaries of the state-of-the-art through R&D contracts like a $2 million award from NIST's Advanced Technology Program an SBIR award from the National Science Foundation, and this AFRL contract.
